MOGADISHU – Somalia’s Minister of Internal Security, General Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail (Fartaag), has participated in the 93rd Interpol General Assembly, held this year in Marrakech, Morocco, where he underscored the country’s commitment to strengthening international security cooperation.
The high-level gathering, which brings together security chiefs, ministers, and police leaders from around the world, focused on global security challenges, counter-terrorism, and coordinated efforts against transnational organized crime.
During the assembly, Minister Fartaag held a bilateral meeting with the President of Interpol, Mr. Ahmed Nasser Al-Raisi. The two discussed a wide range of issues, including combating organized crime networks, enhancing joint counter-terrorism operations, improving international information-sharing systems, and expanding technical training and capacity-building for Somalia’s security agencies.
Minister Fartaag thanked Interpol for its continued support to Somalia, noting that the country is undergoing major reforms aimed at professionalizing its security sector. He emphasized Somalia’s determination to play an active role in global security efforts, especially as the country works to strengthen law enforcement institutions and degrade extremist groups.
For his part, Interpol President Ahmed Nasser Al-Raisi praised Somalia’s recent progress in stabilizing the country and improving security coordination with international partners. He reaffirmed Interpol’s commitment to deepening its cooperation with Somalia, including providing advanced training programs, operational support, and enhanced access to Interpol’s global policing capabilities.
The 93rd General Assembly is one of the world’s most important security forums, serving as a platform for member states to formulate joint strategies to address threats such as terrorism, human trafficking, cybercrime, and narcotics smuggling. Somalia’s active participation this year reflects its growing engagement in global policing and international crime-fighting initiatives.
Officials say the meeting marks another step in Somalia’s efforts to strengthen partnerships aimed at improving national security and contributing to regional and global stability.
