HARGEISA – The Ministry of Interior and Security of Somaliland has announced a sweeping ban on the importation of bulletproof vehicles and open-top pickup trucks, locally referred to as Qabaal, citing national security concerns and the need to reduce potential security threats.

In an official statement issued by the Office of the Minister of Interior and Security, Abdalle Mohamed Carab, the government declared that, effective immediately, no such vehicles will be allowed to enter Somaliland without explicit government authorization. The ban will remain in place until further notice.

The Ministry underscored that this decision is aimed at safeguarding public safety, preventing criminal activities, and ensuring tighter control over potentially dangerous vehicles often used in illicit operations.

Security agencies, customs offices, and all officials involved in vehicle importation have been directed to strictly enforce the ban. The statement also warned that any individual or entity found violating the order would face legal action.

“This measure is part of our ongoing efforts to protect the peace and stability of Somaliland,” the Ministry’s statement read, adding that the security forces and relevant agencies have been instructed to take immediate legal steps against violators.

Authorities believe that regulating the entry of such vehicles will help curb risks associated with armed attacks and other security threats in the region.
