BORAMA — Somaliland authorities have officially announced the number of casualties resulting from a recent protest in the town of Borama, Awdal region, which led to significant civilian deaths and injuries.
The Governor of Awdal region, Abdirashid Hassan Mataan, said at least 19 civilians were killed during the protest, while 214 others were injured.
According to the governor, 20 of the injured remain hospitalised in medical facilities inside Somaliland, with several critically wounded patients transferred abroad to receive specialised medical treatment.
Mr Mataan confirmed that those killed included 18 men and one woman.
He underscored that the figures released do not include members of the security forces who may have been harmed during the protest and related incidents, adding that further details would be made public once comprehensive information becomes available.
The Borama protest has sparked widespread concern and mourning among local residents. Community members and civil society organisations have called for a transparent investigation into the incident and urged authorities to ensure proper medical care for the injured, warning that accountability is essential to prevent similar loss of life in the future.
