LASANOD — The Speaker of the newly formed Northeast State has said that prisoners from Somaliland currently held by the region’s authorities will only be released through peaceful negotiations, stressing that legal proceedings will be applied to those accused of crimes.
Speaking at a press briefing, the Speaker stated, “The Somaliland prisoners we are holding can only be released through dialogue. Those found guilty of criminal offenses will be taken to court and tried according to the law.”
He emphasized that the Northeast administration remains committed to resolving disputes with Somaliland through political dialogue and mutual understanding but underscored the importance of respecting the region’s judicial independence.
The comments come amid ongoing tensions between Somaliland and Northeast forces over contested areas in the Sool and Sanaag regions, where sporadic clashes have displaced civilians and heightened insecurity.
Analysts say the Speaker’s remarks signal a call for de-escalation and a lawful approach to handling detainees captured during the fighting. They also reflect a growing push within the region to pursue peace and reconciliation through dialogue rather than confrontation.
Observers note that both administrations are under increasing pressure from local elders, Somali federal government and the international community to find a peaceful settlement to their long-standing territorial dispute.
