PARIS, (HAN) – The body of South Africa’s ambassador to France, Emmanuel Nkosinathi Mthethwa, has been discovered outside the hotel where he was staying in Paris, the French capital.
Conflicting reports have emerged about the circumstances of his death. Some sources suggest that the 58-year-old diplomat fell from the 22nd floor of the hotel, while others claim he may have been pushed.
According to police, Ambassador Mthethwa’s wife alerted authorities after receiving a message from him expressing fear for his safety.
Following her report, officers began a search which eventually led to the discovery of his body outside the hotel.
Mthethwa, 58, was a veteran of South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle. He belonged to a generation of young activists who fought against racial segregation in the country before going on to serve in public office, including as a member of parliament, prior to his diplomatic posting.
Authorities in France have launched an investigation into the incident, while the South African government has not yet released an official statement regarding the ambassador’s death.
