Beled-Hawo – Armed clashes erupted on Tuesday in the border town of Beled-Hawo, intensifying tensions between the Somali Federal Government and the semi-autonomous regional administration of Jubaland.

The violence broke out after a military aircraft transported Abdirashid Janan to the town. Janan, recently appointed by the federal government as the Head of Intelligence and Security for the Gedo region, was deployed with federal-aligned forces — a move that sparked immediate resistance from Jubaland-affiliated troops.

Eyewitnesses and local sources report that Jubaland forces are currently in full control of Beled-Hawo town, while Abdirashid Janan and federal troops remain stationed at a military base on the outskirts. The standoff has raised fears of another round of fighting, with tensions running high and both sides on alert.

Jubaland officials have accused the federal government of deliberately escalating the situation by deploying Janan to Beled-Hawo. They claim the appointment is part of a broader federal strategy to undermine Jubaland’s authority in the region.

This confrontation marks the latest flashpoint in a long-running power struggle over control of the Gedo region, where both the federal government and Jubaland seek dominance.

Local residents have expressed deep concern over the growing instability and have called for urgent de-escalation efforts to prevent further bloodshed.
