Mogadishu – Tensions are escalating in central Somalia as armed mobilizations intensify near the border of Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle regions, where a growing standoff between the Ma’awisley militia and Al-Shabaab threatens to ignite renewed conflict in an already volatile corridor.

Local sources report increased military activity along the critical stretch between Jalalaqsi (Hiiraan) and Ceel Baraf (Middle Shabelle), with both sides reinforcing positions. The focus of the confrontation centers on the Jaayga Road—a strategic artery vital for the movement of people, goods, and humanitarian aid across central Somalia.

Al-Shabaab is reportedly seeking to regain control over this key route, aiming to disrupt local governance and reestablish its influence in contested territories. In response, the Macawiisley militia—a community-based force aligned with Somali government counterterrorism efforts—has bolstered its presence, particularly around the villages of Qoryaale and Xalfooley in the Jalalaqsi district.

These villages serve as frontline defensive positions, acting as buffers to shield Jalalaqsi from militant advances. Ma’awisley commanders have deployed large numbers of fighters to strategic checkpoints, with three objectives including:

  • 1. Securing transportation corridors
  • 2. Blocking militant infiltration
  • 3. Safeguarding local civilian populations

The militarization has heightened anxiety among residents, many of whom are restricting their movements or preparing for possible displacement.

Security analysts warn that any escalation could derail recent gains made by the Somali government in driving Al-Shabaab from key urban centers. While the group has lost ground in towns and cities, it continues to wage asymmetric warfare, targeting rural outposts and transport routes.

The Somali Federal Government and its international partners have not yet issued statements regarding the unfolding situation. However, observers emphasize that coordinated support for Ma’awisley and stronger federal-local collaboration will be essential to prevent further instability and curb Al-Shabaab’s resurgence.
