MEKELLE — The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has issued a strongly worded statement condemning Ethiopia’s federal government, accusing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration of failing to implement the terms of the Pretoria Peace Agreement, which ended the two-year conflict in northern Ethiopia.
In its latest statement, the TPLF said the federal government had “deliberately violated” key provisions of the 2022 accord, which was signed in South Africa to bring an end to the devastating war between federal forces and Tigrayan fighters. The group accused Addis Ababa of continuing to restrict the movement of people and aid into the Tigray region and of delaying the full reintegration of Tigray into Ethiopia’s political and administrative structures.
“The promises of peace, reconstruction, and normalization have not been fulfilled,” the statement said, adding that Tigray remains “under siege” despite the formal ceasefire.
The Pretoria Agreement was hailed internationally as a breakthrough after a brutal conflict that killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions. However, nearly two years later, humanitarian groups and political observers say the peace remains fragile, with reports of limited progress in disarmament, restoration of services, and the return of internally displaced persons.
The TPLF also accused the federal government of ignoring calls for dialogue and transparency, saying the people of Tigray continue to face insecurity and economic hardship.
The Ethiopian government has not yet responded to the TPLF’s latest accusations. However, officials in Addis Ababa have previously said they are committed to implementing the peace deal and have accused Tigrayan leaders of attempting to politicize the process.
Regional analysts say the renewed tensions highlight the deep mistrust that still lingers between the two sides. Without genuine progress in reconciliation and power-sharing, they warn, Ethiopia risks sliding back into instability.
