ANKARA, (HAN) – Turkey is significantly expanding its oil and gas exploration efforts, extending operations to several regions, including Somalia and, more recently, Pakistan. Alparslan Bayraktar, Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, confirmed that these projects cover both offshore and onshore territories, reflecting Ankara’s growing ambitions to strengthen its energy presence internationally.
Speaking at a press conference, Minister Bayraktar emphasized that Turkey’s exploration activities aim not only to secure new energy resources but also to reinforce strategic partnerships with friendly nations across Africa and Asia. “We are actively pursuing exploration activities in multiple regions, covering both maritime and land territories, to diversify our energy sources and strengthen regional cooperation,” he said.
Although the minister did not reveal the precise locations of the exploration sites in Somalia and Pakistan, he assured that Turkey is committed to carrying out these operations sustainably and in a manner that benefits all parties involved.
Turkey has a history of engagement in Somalia, having signed agreements related to energy, maritime resources, and infrastructure development, which highlights the deepening economic and strategic ties between the two countries.
Analysts note that Ankara’s move into Somalia and Pakistan reflects a broader strategy to expand Turkey’s influence in the global energy sector, particularly in regions with untapped oil and gas potential. The Turkish government is investing in advanced technologies and partnerships with both local and international companies to support these initiatives.
The expansion is expected to bring significant economic benefits, including job creation, technology transfer, and strengthened bilateral relations, while positioning Turkey as a key player in regional energy markets.
