The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has confirmed it conducted an airstrike on June 19 in the Sabiid area of Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region. The operation was carried out in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia.
According to a statement from AFRICOM, the strike specifically targeted Al-Shabaab hideouts in the area. “AFRICOM, in partnership with the Federal Government of Somalia and the Somali National Army, continues to take actions aimed at degrading Al-Shabaab’s capability to plan and conduct attacks that threaten the U.S., its forces, and its citizens both domestically and abroad,” the statement said.
The command did not disclose details regarding casualties among Al-Shabaab militants, nor did it confirm whether any civilians were harmed in the strike.
The United States remains a key international actor in the fight against Al-Shabaab, providing training, logistical support, and operational assistance to Somali security forces, including the elite Danab Special Forces.
In recent days, similar airstrikes targeting Al-Shabaab operatives have been reported across Lower Shabelle, Hiiraan, and Middle Shabelle regions, as joint efforts to weaken the militant group intensify.

This airstrike is not the first time the United States has carried out operations in Somalia, especially in areas where Al-Shabaab is active in country.
