KAMPALA – Uganda boosted their hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup after claiming a 2–0 victory over Somalia in a Group G qualifier played in Kampala.

The Cranes, who came into the match on the back of a strong performance in earlier rounds, dominated the game from start to finish. Their attacking play and defensive solidity proved too much for Somalia, who are still searching for their first win of the qualifying campaign.

Somalia, nicknamed the Ocean Stars, had hoped to bounce back after a disappointing 3–0 loss to Guinea in their previous fixture. However, the team once again struggled to impose themselves, creating few clear chances and spending much of the match on the back foot.

Uganda’s win further strengthens their position in the group, keeping them firmly in the race for qualification. The result also highlights the contrasting fortunes of the two sides—Uganda chasing what would be their first-ever appearance at the World Cup, while Somalia remain bottom of the table with just one point.

The Ocean Stars’ difficulties mirror the broader challenges Somali football has faced in recent years, with instability and lack of resources affecting player development and competitive performance. Despite these obstacles, the team continues to show resilience and determination to compete at the highest level.

As the qualifiers progress, Uganda will look to build on this momentum in their remaining matches, while Somalia will aim to regroup and restore pride in their upcoming fixtures.
