Juba – August 9, 2025 – Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, held high-level talks with South Sudanese President Salva Kiir on Saturday, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and advancing regional stability.

Gen. Kainerugaba, who is also the son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, arrived in Juba yesterday morning and was warmly received by President Kiir at Juba International Airport. The visit marks a significant step toward deepening cooperation between the two neighboring nations, which share a complex history and overlapping security interests.

The talks at the State House centered on enhanced security collaboration, trade, and joint efforts to address regional challenges. Both leaders emphasized the importance of coordinated strategies to maintain peace in a region long affected by instability.

Following the presidential meeting, Gen. Kainerugaba also toured the tactical headquarters of Operation Mlinzi Wa Kimya (“Silent Guardian” in Swahili), an Ugandan peacekeeping initiative in South Sudan. He met with Ugandan troops and commanders deployed under the mission, commending their commitment to safeguarding peace.

Later in the day, he held additional discussions with South Sudan’s Vice President to further solidify joint security measures and explore new avenues of cooperation.

Diplomatic observers view the visit as a pivotal moment in Uganda–South Sudan relations, potentially laying the groundwork for broader agreements on security, trade, and development.

The engagements reaffirmed both governments’ shared vision for a peaceful and prosperous future, underscoring that sustained collaboration remains key to regional stability.
