MOGADISHU, HAN) – The United Kingdom has pledged over $30 million in fresh funding to support Somalia’s ongoing security transition, strengthening Somali forces and African Union partners in the fight against al-Shabaab.
The package includes $8 million for the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) and $22 million for the African Union Support to Somalia (AUSSOM).
According to the UK statement issued Monday, the UNSOS contribution will provide Somali security forces with essential non-lethal support such as food rations, tents, medical supplies, and casualty evacuation. UNSOS currently supports more than 18,900 Somali National Army and police personnel. Since 2021, the UK has contributed over $58 million to UNSOS.
Meanwhile, the $22 million earmarked for AUSSOM will reinforce Somalia’s transition to Somali-led security arrangements. AUSSOM plays a key role in stabilising newly recovered areas, backing Somali-led operations, and addressing drivers of regional insecurity.
“The UK has been a committed partner to Somalia for over a decade, recognising that its security is vital to regional stability and prosperity,” said UK Development Minister Baroness Chapman. “This contribution reflects our broader commitment to African-led peace efforts, reinforcing our investment in a future where trade thrives, communities flourish, and terrorism no longer threatens everyday life.”
The pledge was announced as the UK co-hosted an AUSSOM Donor Conference alongside Somalia, the African Union, and the United Nations on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Since 2021, the UK has contributed nearly $140 million to AUSSOM and its predecessor missions, reaffirming London’s long-term commitment to Somalia’s stability.
