NEW YORK — The United Nations Security Council convened an emergency session to discuss the deteriorating situation in Sudan, following reports of a mass killing in the city of Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur State.

According to a statement from the Spokesperson of the UN Secretary-General, the urgent meeting was requested by six member states — Somalia, the United Kingdom, Algeria, Sierra Leone, Guyana, and Denmark — who jointly called on the Council to take immediate action to address what they described as “the worsening humanitarian and security crisis” in Sudan.

The countries urged the Security Council to find a swift and lasting solution to the recent wave of violence in Al-Fashir, where hundreds of civilians were reportedly killed and thousands displaced amid fierce fighting between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).

In their joint statement, the six nations emphasized that “the world cannot remain silent while civilians are being slaughtered and entire communities uprooted.” They called for accountability for those responsible and renewed efforts to protect civilians, facilitate humanitarian access, and restore peace in Sudan.

The Al-Fashir massacre, which occurred earlier this week, has drawn widespread international condemnation and renewed global attention to the Sudanese conflict, now in its second year. Witnesses and humanitarian organizations report that the RSF and allied militias carried out attacks that left scores dead, including women and children, while thousands fled their homes seeking safety in neighboring areas.

The ongoing conflict between the RSF and the national army, which began in April 2023, has plunged Sudan into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Millions have been displaced, and large parts of the country have been left without access to food, medical supplies, or basic services.

UN officials have repeatedly warned that the situation in Sudan is approaching catastrophic levels, with the risk of famine and further atrocities increasing daily.

The Security Council’s emergency meeting is expected to explore new diplomatic and humanitarian measures to pressure both warring parties toward a ceasefire and to ensure the protection of civilians trapped in conflict zones.
