ADEN — Yemen’s Chief of General Staff announced on Monday a new phase of military unification, declaring that the country’s armed forces will operate under one flag, one leadership, one army, and one alliance, with Saudi Arabia identified as Yemen’s sole strategic ally.
In a televised address, the military commander said the move aims to consolidate all Yemeni forces under a unified command structure in order to strengthen the fight against what he described as a single enemy — the Houthi movement and Iran, which he accused of backing the group.
“The current phase requires unity of command and purpose,” the general said, adding that fragmentation among military factions had weakened Yemen’s ability to confront ongoing security threats. He said all armed units would be placed under centralized leadership to improve coordination, discipline, and operational effectiveness.
Saudi Arabia was described as Yemen’s primary partner in the effort, with the commander praising Riyadh’s role in supporting Yemen’s military, political institutions, and territorial integrity.
The announcement comes as Yemen continues to face years of conflict that has divided its military and political landscape. Analysts say the declaration signals an attempt to reassert central authority and reshape alliances as regional dynamics evolve.
Houthi officials and Iranian authorities have not immediately responded to the remarks.
