MOGADISHU — Somali lawmaker Abdirahman Abdishakur, one of the most prominent opposition figures to the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), has warned against any actions that could undermine the country’s sovereignty, saying Somalia’s independence is non-negotiable.
Speaking on recent developments, Abdishakur said the issue should not be framed as a political dispute between the government and the opposition, but as a national matter that transcends partisan divisions. He stressed that Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are fundamental principles that cannot be compromised.
“This is not a dispute between the ruling side and the opposition,” Abdishakur said. “It is a national issue with far-reaching consequences for Somalia’s security and the overall stability of the Horn of Africa.”
He warned that any diplomatic or political moves that weaken Somalia’s sovereignty could worsen insecurity both inside the country and across the region. Abdishakur noted that the Horn of Africa remains fragile, having endured decades of conflict, political instability, separatist movements and intense geopolitical competition.
The lawmaker said undermining Somalia’s unity risks reigniting tensions, empowering armed groups and deepening political divisions at a time when the country is working to strengthen state institutions, rebuild its security forces and recover from prolonged conflict.
Abdishakur called on Somali political leaders, regardless of affiliation, to adopt a unified national position in defense of sovereignty. He also urged regional and international partners to respect Somalia’s territorial integrity and avoid actions that could further destabilize the Horn of Africa.
