GODEY — Somalia’s president is expected to travel on Thursday for a one-day visit to Godey, a city in Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State, to attend a high-level regional conference focused on security cooperation, tourism development, and stability in the Horn of Africa, officials said.
The visit comes as official delegations from several countries in the region arrived in Godey on Wednesday, ahead of the talks, which are expected to bring together senior government officials, security chiefs, and regional representatives.
According to organizers, the conference will center on strengthening cross-border security, enhancing intelligence-sharing mechanisms, and coordinating joint efforts to counter terrorism and transnational threats affecting the region. Participants are also expected to discuss the development of a shared regional strategy aimed at promoting long-term peace and stability across the Horn of Africa.
A key focus of the talks will be the security of shared borders, particularly in areas vulnerable to militant infiltration, arms trafficking, and organized crime. Officials say closer cooperation between neighboring states is essential to prevent extremist groups from exploiting porous borders.
The agenda also includes discussions on regional cooperation in tourism, with leaders seeking to link improved security to economic development and people-to-people exchange. Organizers say promoting safe tourism could help foster regional integration and economic recovery in post-conflict areas.
On the sidelines of the conference, Somalia’s president is expected to hold bilateral meetings with regional leaders to discuss security coordination, diplomatic ties, and joint initiatives to stabilize border communities.
The meeting in Godey takes place amid ongoing security challenges in the Horn of Africa, where governments have increasingly emphasized collective security frameworks and regional dialogue as key tools for addressing shared threats and maintaining stability.
