MOGADISHU — The Somali Air Force is currently undergoing a significant phase of rebuilding and modernization as part of broader efforts by the Federal Government of Somalia to strengthen national security and sovereignty.
Officials say the air force is in an advanced stage of preparation and capacity-building, with plans to soon assume full responsibility for monitoring, managing, and defending Somalia’s airspace. The move is expected to enhance the country’s independence in air defense and ensure that the skies over Somalia become safer and more reliable for both civilian and military aviation.
Over the past few years, Somalia has been investing in training pilots, upgrading air bases, and restoring aviation infrastructure that was damaged or neglected during decades of conflict. New training programs for pilots and technical crews are being conducted both inside Somalia and abroad, as the country seeks to rebuild a professional and capable air force.
Security officials say that once the transition is completed, Somali authorities will be able to independently control radar systems, oversee air traffic security, and respond to any threats within the country’s airspace. This step is considered an important milestone in strengthening state institutions and national defense capabilities.
The rebuilding of the air force is also closely linked to the broader stabilization efforts taking place in Somalia, where the government is working with international partners to improve the country’s military capacity and protect its territorial integrity.
Analysts note that full control of national airspace is a symbol of sovereignty and a key element in ensuring long-term security, economic growth, and safe international flights to and from Mogadishu and other major cities across Somalia.
