MOGADISHU – The government of Somalia has strongly condemned a series of deadly attacks that occurred in Zamfara state in northwestern Nigeria, where armed assailants reportedly killed more than 50 civilians and abducted several women and children.
In a statement released by the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Somalia expressed solidarity with the Nigerian government and people during what it described as a “difficult and painful time,” following the attacks that targeted rural communities in the region.
“Somalia stands firmly with the government and people of Nigeria in confronting terrorism and violent extremism,” the statement said. “We extend our deepest condolences to the families and relatives of those who lost their lives and wish a speedy recovery to all those injured.”
According to local reports from Zamfara, the attackers stormed villages in coordinated raids, opening fire on residents and setting homes ablaze. The violence has been part of a broader pattern of insecurity in northwestern Nigeria, where armed groups frequently raid communities, carry out kidnappings for ransom and attack security forces.
Somalia’s government strongly denounced the targeting of civilians, describing such acts as crimes that threaten peace and stability not only in Nigeria but across the African continent. The statement emphasized that terrorism and armed violence continue to pose serious challenges to national security and development in many parts of Africa.
The Somali government also called for the immediate and unconditional release of all abducted individuals, particularly women and children, urging those responsible for the attacks to be brought to justice. It reiterated its support for Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to restore security and protect vulnerable communities affected by the violence.
In addition, Somalia highlighted the importance of stronger regional cooperation among African nations to combat terrorism and armed groups. Officials noted that intelligence sharing, coordinated security operations and stronger partnerships among governments are critical in addressing the root causes of instability and preventing future attacks.
The statement concluded by reaffirming Somalia’s commitment to working with regional and international partners to promote peace, strengthen security cooperation and protect civilians across Africa.
