MOSCOW — A senior Russian official warned that the world could move closer to a global conflict if tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate under President Donald Trump, saying that while World War III has not begun, the risk could grow if the current course persists.

Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, a close ally of Vladimir Putin and now a senior security official in Russia, said in remarks reported by Russian media that “World War III has not started yet, but it could begin if Trump continues on this path.” He added that Washington understands the potential consequences of a nuclear confrontation.

Medvedev’s comments come amid heightened tensions following reported U.S. military operations targeting Iranian positions and the growing involvement of regional and international actors. The crisis has raised concerns among world leaders about the possibility of a wider conflict in the Middle East that could draw in major powers.

Russia has repeatedly criticized U.S. military actions in the region and called for diplomatic solutions, warning that direct clashes between nuclear-armed states would carry catastrophic consequences. Moscow has also urged restraint and dialogue among all parties involved.

Officials in Washington have defended their actions as necessary for national security and regional stability, while critics within the United States and abroad warn that continued escalation could deepen the crisis and increase the risk of a broader war.

Analysts say Medvedev’s statement reflects Moscow’s growing alarm about the trajectory of the conflict, though such warnings are also part of the geopolitical messaging between Russia and the United States during periods of high tension.
