Cairo — The government of Egypt has announced the discovery of a significant new natural gas reserve in its Western Desert, a move officials say could strengthen the country’s energy security and provide much-needed economic relief.

The Ministry of Petroleum said the discovery was made by U.S.-based energy firm Apache Corporation, which has been carrying out exploration and drilling operations in the region as part of its ongoing partnership with Egyptian authorities. The company has operated in Egypt’s Western Desert for decades and is one of the country’s largest foreign investors in the energy sector.

Initial assessments indicate that production from the newly discovered field could reach approximately 26 million cubic feet of natural gas per day. Experts say further drilling and evaluation could potentially increase these figures as the full size of the reserve becomes clearer.

Petroleum officials described the discovery as a “strategic addition” to Egypt’s energy portfolio, particularly as the country seeks to meet growing domestic demand for electricity and industrial fuel. Natural gas plays a central role in Egypt’s power generation, and increased output could help reduce reliance on imports while stabilizing energy prices.

The announcement comes amid broader economic challenges facing Egypt, including inflationary pressures and reduced foreign currency inflows. A major factor has been the decline in revenues from the Suez Canal, one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes, which has been affected by regional instability and disruptions in global shipping patterns.

In response, the government has intensified efforts to diversify its revenue streams, with a particular focus on expanding oil and gas exploration. The Western Desert remains one of Egypt’s most promising regions for hydrocarbon production, hosting numerous fields operated by international and domestic companies.

Energy analysts say continued discoveries could reinforce Egypt’s ambitions to position itself as a regional energy hub, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean. The country already operates liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facilities and has sought to increase exports to European and Asian markets.

Officials added that further appraisal drilling, infrastructure development, and investment planning will be carried out in the coming months to fully develop the new field. If successful, the project could contribute significantly to Egypt’s economic recovery and long-term energy strategy.
