MOGADISHU — Somalia’s Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation has called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire following renewed fighting between rival clans in the Dawaco area of Badhan district in the northern Sanaag region, urging all parties to end hostilities and pursue dialogue.
In a statement, the ministry expressed deep concern over the violence, warning that continued clashes risk worsening the humanitarian situation, endangering civilians and undermining ongoing efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.
The ministry appealed to all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint, immediately stop the fighting and refrain from actions or statements that could inflame tensions. It urged community leaders to prioritize peaceful dialogue and reconciliation as the only sustainable means of resolving the dispute.
The Federal Government reaffirmed that peace, reconciliation and social cohesion remain fundamental to protecting civilian lives, advancing development and safeguarding Somalia’s national unity. It said it stands ready to support all initiatives aimed at ending the conflict and restoring lasting peace.
The ministry also called on traditional elders, religious scholars, women, youth, local administrations and other respected community leaders to play an active role in mediation efforts and help bring the rival sides back to the negotiating table.
It emphasized that traditional conflict-resolution mechanisms, supported by government institutions, remain vital in addressing inter-clan disputes and preventing further bloodshed.
The appeal comes amid continued efforts by the Federal Government and local leaders to promote reconciliation in conflict-affected areas across Somalia, where clan disputes over land, resources and local governance have periodically erupted into violence.
Officials said a peaceful settlement would not only protect affected communities but also strengthen broader state-building efforts, improve security and create conditions for sustainable development in the Sanaag region.
