BAYDHABO — Security forces from southwestern Somalia have entered the city of Baydhabo from all four directions, raising fears that fighting could erupt at any moment, local sources reported on Sunday.
Authorities have closed major roads and restricted movement within the city as residents remain confined to their homes amid growing anxiety. Educational institutions and businesses have suspended operations, and local markets remain largely empty, according to eyewitnesses.

Residents described scenes of tension and fear. “People are staying indoors because they are afraid the situation could escalate into full-scale fighting,” one local told AFP. “Everyone is worried about the safety of their families.”
The deployment of security forces comes amid ongoing political and clan tensions in the Bay region, which have periodically led to outbreaks of violence in the past. Analysts warned that the current mobilization could trigger clashes if opposing groups engage, further destabilizing the area.
Local authorities have urged calm and called on citizens to avoid public gatherings, while humanitarian organizations expressed concern for vulnerable populations who may be trapped if fighting erupts.
The situation remains fluid, with reports of troop movements continuing throughout the day. International observers and regional officials have urged restraint to prevent a sudden escalation of violence in the city.
