MOGADISHU — The United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) on Sunday called for urgent dialogue to resolve escalating political tensions between the Federal Government of Somalia and regional administrations, particularly the Southwest State, warning that continued disputes could undermine fragile progress in governance, security, and humanitarian conditions.
UNSOM said it was closely monitoring developments in Southwest Somalia, stressing that all disagreements should be addressed through constructive engagement rather than force. In a statement, the mission said:
“We are closely following developments in the Southwest State. Political disagreements between the Federal Government and the federal member states must be resolved through dialogue and constructive engagement, in full respect of Somalia’s federal constitution.”
The mission expressed concern that ongoing political friction could have serious repercussions for national stability, security, unity, and humanitarian conditions. “We are particularly concerned that escalating tensions could negatively affect stability, security, national unity, and the well-being of civilians,” the statement added. “It is essential that all parties demonstrate restraint and engage in meaningful dialogue to avoid actions that could jeopardize peacebuilding and humanitarian efforts.”
The Southwest State, a federal member state in Somalia, has been at the center of political disputes over governance, appointments, and resource-sharing with the Federal Government. Analysts warn that tensions could intensify into armed confrontations if not addressed diplomatically. Recent reports indicate increased deployment of security forces in parts of the region, raising fears among residents.
Local officials in Baidoa, the state capital, have confirmed restrictions on movement and heightened security measures, citing concerns over potential unrest. One government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said:
“We are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with federal authorities. Our priority is to ensure the safety of civilians while seeking a political resolution through dialogue.”
Humanitarian agencies have expressed concern that escalating tensions could exacerbate already dire conditions in Southwest Somalia, where access to basic services remains limited. Displacement, food insecurity, and restricted access to education have affected tens of thousands of people in the region. Aid workers warn that any conflict could hinder relief efforts and put vulnerable populations at risk.
A representative from a local aid organization said:
“Even small-scale clashes can disrupt aid delivery and force families to flee their homes. Political disputes must not come at the expense of civilians who are already struggling to survive.”
UNSOM also highlighted the potential regional impact, noting that instability in Southwest Somalia could have ripple effects across the Horn of Africa. The UN mission stressed that exacerbating the conflict could undermine broader peacebuilding and development initiatives in the country and neighboring states.
Analysts note that Somalia’s federal system relies on cooperation between the central government and member states to maintain stability. Any breakdown in relations could threaten the delicate balance that has been gradually established over the past decade.
“The progress we have achieved in governance, security, and humanitarian response is fragile. Renewed conflict could set back years of effort and endanger the lives of thousands,” UNSOM said in its statement.
UNSOM concluded by urging all parties to exercise restraint, avoid actions that could lead to armed confrontation, and engage in inclusive, transparent dialogue. The mission emphasized that political disputes should be resolved peacefully, with respect for the constitution and human rights, to safeguard both civilians and the country’s long-term development.
“We reiterate our call for dialogue, patience, and compromise. Escalation of conflict would undermine both local and regional stability, as well as humanitarian gains achieved in recent years,” the statement said.
The situation in Southwest Somalia remains fluid, with authorities and communities closely watching developments. Observers warn that without immediate dialogue and political compromise, the region risks further instability at a time when Somalia is already facing multiple humanitarian and security challenges.
