MOGADISHU — The Somali National Army (SNA) has taken full control of the strategic area of Daynuunaay in southern Somalia following a fierce clash with Al-Shabaab militants, the Ministry of Defence said on Sunday.
According to an official statement, government forces repelled a planned ambush by Al-Shabaab fighters on the outskirts of Daynuunaay, located in the Bay Region. The confrontation resulted in what authorities described as “heavy losses” for the militant group.
“At least 21 Al-Shabaab fighters were killed during the operation, while more than 10 others were wounded,” the ministry said, adding that the army successfully thwarted the attack and pushed back the insurgents.
The SNA now maintains full control of Daynuunaay, a key transit point along the strategic route linking Baidoa and Mogadishu. The route is considered vital for the movement of troops, humanitarian supplies, and commercial transport between the regional capital and the national capital.
Military officials said additional القوات have been deployed to reinforce security in the area and prevent any counterattacks by Al-Shabaab fighters. Troops are also conducting clearance operations in surrounding المناطق to remove explosives and dismantle militant hideouts.
Residents in nearby villages reported hearing heavy gunfire during the early hours of the operation, though calm has since returned following the الجيش’s advance into the المنطقة.
The Ministry of Defence Somalia stated that the operation forms part of a broader campaign to secure key المناطق and reopen major roads that had been threatened by insurgent activity. Officials emphasized that efforts are ongoing to stabilize liberated areas and restore basic services.
Authorities added that further updates on the situation, including verified casualty figures and humanitarian conditions, will be released as more information becomes available from the ground.
