Mogadishu — A military aircraft carrying troops from Somalia’s elite Unit 77, responsible for presidential security, departed Aden Adde International Airport on Monday, AFP has learned from security sources. The deployment follows reports of shifting political dynamics in Baidoa, the interim administrative capital of Southwest State.

Unit 77, known for safeguarding top government officials and strategic facilities in the capital, was reportedly mobilized as tensions rise in Southwest State after recent movements by regional political figures. Witnesses at the airport said the aircraft took off in the early afternoon, carrying a full complement of troops and equipment.

Meanwhile, senior government officials are reported to be traveling to Baidoa, raising questions about potential coordination with federal military forces and the local administration. The movements come after Abdiaziz Laftagareen left Baidoa earlier, a move that political analysts suggest could signal a shift in local power dynamics.

Security analysts warn that the rapid deployment of elite forces and high-level officials could heighten tensions in the region, which has experienced a mix of political disagreements and security challenges in recent months. Residents in and around Baidoa reported increased military activity and a visible presence of government troops, prompting caution and limited movement.

Federal government sources confirmed to AFP that the operation is aimed at ensuring security and stabilizing key positions, but declined to provide additional details on whether it is part of a broader military strategy or precautionary measures in response to the changing political situation.

Humanitarian observers have expressed concern that any escalation in Baidoa could impact civilians, particularly vulnerable populations such as women, children, and internally displaced persons already affected by conflict and recurrent drought.

The developments come amid ongoing efforts by the Somali federal government to assert authority over its federal member states and maintain stability across regions experiencing political uncertainty.
