Baidoa – Around 2,000 soldiers loyal to former Somali President South Western State, Somalia, Abdiaziz Laftagareen, equipped with 27 military vehicles and weapons, have reportedly been stationed in Owdiinle, some 65 km southwest of Baidoa, after being withdrawn from the city earlier today. Officials say the relocation is intended to prevent violence in Owdiinle, where Laftagareen’s sub-clan resides.

Sources report that efforts are underway to reintegrate the troops, along with their vehicles and arms, into the newly established military structure. However, mistrust remains high among local residents and the soldiers themselves, amid threats from senior figures in the current administration to attack the forces if they do not surrender.

The stationed troops—including government ministers and elders from the Harin community—have refused to hand over their weapons or personnel to the leadership overseeing the transition. They have called on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to guarantee their safety and ensure they are not targeted due to their association with Laftagareen.

Reports also indicate that the soldiers trust only those currently present in Baidoa, including Minister Muqtaar Roobow, raising concerns about a potential clash if reintegration attempts fail. President Hassan is expected in Baidoa in the coming hours to mediate the situation, although the risk of armed confrontation remains high.

The developments highlight the fragile security situation in the Bay region, where political loyalties and clan affiliations continue to shape the movement and deployment of armed forces.
