JEDDAH — Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Friday during a high-level visit to Jeddah, where the two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral relations, expanding economic cooperation, and deepening political coordination.
According to the Saudi Press Agency, the talks focused on boosting trade and investment ties, particularly in energy, infrastructure, and technology sectors, as both countries seek to broaden their strategic partnership.
The leaders also exchanged views on the latest regional developments, including the impact of ongoing military escalation on freedom of international navigation, global energy markets, and supply chains. They emphasized the importance of maintaining stability in key maritime routes and ensuring energy security amid rising geopolitical tensions.
Discussions further addressed the broader implications of the conflict on the global economy, with both sides highlighting the need for coordinated international efforts to reduce risks, prevent escalation, and promote diplomatic solutions. They also explored ways to enhance joint efforts in counterterrorism and regional security cooperation.
Meloni arrived earlier in the day at King Abdulaziz International Airport, where she was received by senior Saudi officials, including Makkah Region Governor Prince Saud bin Mishaal bin Abdulaziz, along with local authorities and the Italian ambassador to the Kingdom.
Italian government sources said the previously unannounced visit reflects Rome’s growing engagement in the Gulf region. The trip is expected to include additional meetings in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, where Meloni will reaffirm Italy’s political and security support for the three nations amid concerns over Iranian attacks on their territories.
The visit underscores Italy’s efforts to strengthen its diplomatic presence in the Middle East and to play a more active role in addressing regional crises. It also marks the first trip to the region by a European Union leader since the conflict involving the United States and Israel escalated at the end of February, signaling increased European attention to the evolving security situation.
