WASHINGTON, D.C. — Tim Kaine, a senior U.S. lawmaker, has called on Iran government to treat a missing American pilot in accordance with international law, amid rising tensions following ongoing military exchanges.

Speaking during a public briefing, Senator Kaine urged Iranian authorities to ensure the safety and humane treatment of the pilot if he is in their custody. He emphasized that adherence to international legal standards, including the protections outlined in the Geneva Conventions, would send a strong signal about Iran’s willingness to act as a responsible member of the international community.
The appeal comes after reports that the pilot went missing during a combat mission involving an F-15 Eagle. According to defense sources, the aircraft had been engaged in strikes targeting Iranian infrastructure before losing contact.
U.S. defense officials said search-and-rescue operations are ongoing, with military assets deployed to gather intelligence and locate the pilot. However, they declined to provide operational details, citing security concerns. The U.S. Department of Defense has also indicated it is coordinating with regional allies to monitor the situation closely.
Diplomatic channels are reportedly being explored as well. Officials in United States have not ruled out indirect communication with Iranian authorities through intermediaries, as tensions remain high across the region. Analysts say such backchannel diplomacy could play a key role if the pilot is confirmed to be in Iranian custody.
U.S. officials have not confirmed whether the pilot was captured, killed, or remains missing, but efforts are underway to determine his fate. Military analysts note that such incidents carry significant diplomatic implications, particularly if a captured pilot becomes a focal point in the broader conflict.
Regional reactions have been cautious. Allies have called for restraint and respect for international humanitarian law, warning that the situation could further escalate an already volatile conflict. Some experts have also raised concerns about the risks to military personnel operating in contested airspace.
Kaine stressed that the treatment of the pilot could influence international perceptions of Iran, adding that compliance with established laws of armed conflict would demonstrate respect for humanitarian norms even during wartime.
There has been no immediate official response from Tehran regarding the senator’s remarks or the status of the missing pilot.
