MOGADISHU — Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Friday joined hundreds of young athletes in a large-scale road race in Mogadishu, as part of National Sports Week celebrations aimed at promoting peace, unity, and youth participation, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The event drew participants from across the capital, including secondary school students, university youth, sports clubs, and community organizations. Government officials, security personnel, and civic leaders also took part, turning the race into a high-profile public gathering that highlighted national cohesion and civic engagement.
Security forces were visibly deployed along key routes as runners passed through major streets in the capital, reflecting ongoing efforts to ensure safe public events. Organisers said the initiative forms part of a broader government strategy to use sports as a platform for social integration, youth empowerment, and peacebuilding.
Speaking after taking part in the race, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre praised the strong turnout and described Somali youth as “the driving force of the nation’s future.” He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in sports infrastructure and expanding opportunities for young people nationwide.
Officials said similar Sports Week activities — including football tournaments, community fitness sessions, and school competitions — will continue in other regions, as authorities seek to strengthen national unity and promote healthier lifestyles.
Somalia has endured more than three decades of conflict, state collapse, and insecurity. Against this backdrop, large public gatherings such as mass road races, particularly with senior government participation, carry significant political and social symbolism.
The event in Mogadishu highlights several key developments, including renewed efforts by the state to strengthen public engagement, the growing use of sports as a tool for peacebuilding, and continued emphasis on youth inclusion in national recovery and development.
