ADDIS ABABA – The African Union (AU) on Saturday strongly condemned a wave of coordinated attacks across Mali, including in the capital, Bamako, warning that the violence poses a serious threat to civilians and risks further destabilizing the wider Sahel region.

AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressed “deep concern” over the assaults, which Malian security sources said were carried out by armed extremist groups targeting military installations, government facilities, and strategic positions. The attacks, described as highly coordinated and simultaneous, struck multiple cities in both the capital and interior regions in the early hours of Saturday.

Residents reported heavy gunfire and powerful explosions, with some describing scenes of panic as security forces moved swiftly to contain the situation. Local sources indicated that key military barracks and checkpoints were among the primary targets, suggesting a well-planned operation aimed at testing state security capacity.

In a statement, the AU said Youssouf is closely monitoring developments and “strongly condemns these acts,” stressing that such violence could expose civilian populations to significant harm and worsen an already fragile security environment. He called for accountability for those responsible and reaffirmed the AU’s continued support for Mali’s efforts to restore order.

Youssouf further reiterated the AU’s “steadfast commitment” to promoting peace, security, and constitutional governance in Mali, while urging all stakeholders to prioritize stability and protect civilian lives. He also emphasized the importance of strengthened regional cooperation to address the persistent threat of armed groups operating across the Sahel.

Meanwhile, the Malian Armed Forces said the situation was “under control” following a rapid and forceful response. In a statement issued around 11:00 a.m. local time, the military said the attackers had suffered “heavy setbacks,” with several neutralized and others forced to retreat. Security operations were continuing to secure affected areas and prevent further attacks.

Although no official casualty figures were immediately released, security officials indicated that assessments were ongoing. Authorities also urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces as operations continue.

Mali has for years been at the center of a complex insurgency involving extremist groups linked to regional and transnational networks. Despite repeated military campaigns and international interventions, including efforts by regional partners, the security situation remains volatile, particularly in central and northern regions of the country.
