BERLIN — Germany has publicly criticised the United States for its handling of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, marking a rare divergence between the two long-standing allies.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described Washington’s military approach toward Iran as “unacceptable” and “humiliating,” signalling growing unease in Berlin over the direction of the conflict and its broader regional implications.

Speaking during a visit to the western German town of Marsberg, Merz said the United States appeared to be facing strategic challenges, warning that current policies risk further escalating tensions rather than containing them.

He added that Iran seemed to hold a stronger position in the unfolding confrontation, raising concerns about the effectiveness of Washington’s strategy and its potential consequences for regional stability.

Germany has traditionally maintained close coordination with the United States on foreign policy and security matters, particularly within the NATO framework. However, analysts say Berlin’s latest remarks reflect increasing concern among European allies over the risk of a wider conflict in the Middle East.

The criticism comes amid heightened tensions involving Iran and US-linked military actions in the region, with fears growing that miscalculation could trigger broader instability affecting global security and energy markets.

German officials have repeatedly called for de-escalation, urging all sides to prioritise diplomacy and avoid actions that could deepen the crisis.

There was no immediate response from US authorities to Merz’s comments.
