DOHA — Relations between Somalia and Qatar appear to be entering a new phase as Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre continues an official visit to Doha, where he held talks on Sunday with his Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between the two countries, according to information released following the talks.
The visit comes as Somalia seeks to deepen its strategic partnerships with regional and international allies amid ongoing political, security and economic challenges.
Qatar has maintained close relations with Somalia in recent years and has provided political and development support to the Somali government. The two countries have also cooperated on issues including infrastructure, investment, humanitarian assistance and regional security.
In a separate development, the Qatari government confirmed that Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani received a written message from Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
The message was delivered by Prime Minister Hamza during his visit to Doha and was handed to Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, who conveyed it to the Qatari Emir, according to the Qatari statement.
The contents of the presidential message were not immediately disclosed. However, the exchange underscores the high-level engagement between Mogadishu and Doha and comes amid continued efforts by both governments to strengthen their political and economic partnership.
Prime Minister Hamza’s meeting with his Qatari counterpart and the delivery of President Hassan Sheikh’s message to the Emir could signal a renewed push to advance cooperation between the two countries.
Somalia has increasingly sought stronger diplomatic and economic partnerships as it works to consolidate state institutions, improve security and attract foreign investment. Qatar, meanwhile, has sought to maintain an active diplomatic role in the Horn of Africa and wider region.
The latest discussions are expected to further reinforce the longstanding relationship between Somalia and Qatar, with future cooperation potentially covering economic development, investment, security, infrastructure and regional diplomatic issues.
