VANCOUVER/MOGADISHU — Somalia’s football authorities say the country’s sporting sector has recorded “tangible progress” in recent years, as officials continue efforts to strengthen international engagement and domestic development of the game.

The remarks come as the head of the Somalia Football Federation, Cali Cabdi Maxamed, participated in a high-level strategic meeting of African football leaders in Vancouver, Canada, ahead of the FIFA Congress.

The meeting brought together 54 presidents of African football associations under the leadership of Patrice Motsepe and Gianni Infantino, focusing on governance reforms, infrastructure development, and expanding investment in African football.

Officials say Somalia’s participation reflects growing international recognition of its football institutions, which have been undergoing gradual restructuring amid broader national recovery efforts.

In recent years, Somali football authorities say they have made progress in strengthening league organization, improving administrative systems, and expanding youth development programs. Efforts have also focused on rebuilding football infrastructure and increasing participation at both regional and national levels.

The country’s football leadership has also sought to deepen engagement with regional and global bodies, including the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA, as part of a long-term strategy to raise competitive standards and attract development support.

However, challenges remain significant, including limited facilities, funding constraints, and the long-term impact of conflict and institutional fragility. Despite these obstacles, officials say continued participation in international forums signals Somalia’s ambition to strengthen its presence in global football governance.

Analysts note that Somalia’s growing visibility in CAF and FIFA meetings marks a shift from years of limited engagement, with renewed efforts to integrate the country more fully into international sport structures.

The Somali Football Federation says it hopes that sustained reforms and international cooperation will translate into improved performance, stronger domestic competitions, and greater opportunities for young players across the country.
