In a significant escalation of counterterrorism efforts, elite units of the Somali National Army (SNA) conducted two high-impact operations in southern Somalia, eliminating senior leaders of the Al-Shabaab militant group in the regions of Lower Shabelle and Lower Jubba.

Precision Strike in Bariire — Lower Shabelle:
Late last night, Danab Commandos launched a meticulously coordinated raid in the Bariire area, targeting concealed Al-Shabaab positions. The operation resulted in the deaths of seven militants, including the group’s top landmine expert in Lower Shabelle — a figure reportedly responsible for orchestrating deadly IED attacks across the region. The commandos also destroyed fortified hideouts and underground bunkers believed to have been central to planning assaults on civilian and military targets.

Major Offensive in Maqooqa — Lower Jubba:
Simultaneously, the Ministry of Defense confirmed a successful joint operation by Danab Commandos and international partners in Maqooqa, approximately 13 kilometers west of Bulo-Haji in Lower Jubba. This strategic strike neutralized 37 militants, including senior field commanders of Al-Shabaab. Intelligence reports suggest the targeted site functioned as a command hub for regional operations.

The Ministry of Defense described both offensives as part of an intensifying campaign to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s operational infrastructure. Officials reaffirmed that Danab Forces will maintain pressure and attacks on this group to secure national stability.

“These successful operations underscore the growing capability of our forces and our unshakable commitment to protecting Somali lives and sovereignty,” the Ministry stated.

As the government steps up its military efforts, the recent gains represent a substantial blow to Al-Shabaab’s ability to conduct coordinated attacks in the south, and signal a renewed momentum in Somalia’s long-running battle against violent extremism.
