NAIROBI — The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Deputy Secretary General, Mohamed Abdi Waare, has welcomed Kenyan President William Ruto’s visit to Kenya’s northeastern region, describing it as an important step toward strengthening governance, development, and regional stability.
The visit comes as the northeastern region continues to face long-standing development challenges, including infrastructure gaps and security concerns linked to cross-border militancy near the Somalia border.
IGAD said the visit reflects the Kenyan government’s commitment to improving service delivery and addressing historical marginalization in the region.
President William Ruto has prioritized development initiatives in marginalized regions since taking office, with a focus on infrastructure, security, and economic inclusion.
The northeastern region, which borders Somalia, has frequently experienced insecurity linked to al-Shabaab, prompting ongoing security cooperation between Kenya and Somalia, as well as broader regional coordination.
IGAD emphasized that continued engagement between member states is essential for promoting peace, stability, and economic integration across the Horn of Africa.
The statement highlights ongoing regional efforts to address security challenges while advancing development in historically underserved areas.
