BOSASO — The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has assisted in the voluntary return of 56 Ethiopian nationals from Bosaso, Puntland, Somalia, after they had gathered in preparation for a dangerous sea journey.
Among those repatriated were 10 unaccompanied children, highlighting the growing risks faced by vulnerable migrants attempting irregular migration routes across the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.
The migrants were reportedly seeking to cross the sea route in hopes of reaching Yemen and eventually other destinations, despite the dangers posed by overcrowded boats, harsh weather conditions, trafficking networks, and conflict in transit areas.
IOM said the return operation was carried out through its Voluntary Humanitarian Return programme, which provides migrants with safe transportation, assistance, and support to reunite with their communities in Ethiopia.
The organization has repeatedly warned migrants about the dangers of irregular migration routes from the Horn of Africa, where thousands attempt risky journeys every year in search of economic opportunities and better living conditions.
Bosaso has become a major transit point for migrants from Ethiopia and other parts of the region due to its location near the Gulf of Aden, a route often used by people attempting to reach Yemen and beyond.
Authorities and humanitarian organizations continue to call for stronger protection measures, awareness campaigns, and legal migration pathways to prevent loss of lives at sea.
The repatriation comes amid continued efforts by regional governments and international agencies to address irregular migration and protect vulnerable groups, especially children travelling without family support.
