MOGADISHU — Somalia’s elite security forces, including the Gorgor Special Commandos of the Somali National Army and the Haramcad Special Police Unit, were deployed in large numbers across Mogadishu’s Abdiaziz district on Thursday amid heightened security measures in the capital.

Residents reported seeing heavily armed troops, military vehicles, and security checkpoints positioned at key roads, government facilities, and strategic locations throughout the district. Security forces were also observed conducting patrols and monitoring movement in several neighborhoods.

The deployment comes as Somali authorities continue efforts to strengthen security in Mogadishu and prevent potential attacks by Al-Shabaab militants, who have frequently targeted government institutions, security personnel, and civilians in the capital.

Witnesses said traffic was temporarily disrupted on some roads as security personnel carried out inspections and controlled access to certain areas. Despite the increased military presence, daily activities continued in most parts of the district under close security surveillance.

Government officials did not immediately disclose the specific reason for the operation. However, security experts noted that similar deployments are often linked to intelligence warnings, protection of senior government officials, or preparations for major political and security events.

The Gorgor and Haramcad units are among Somalia’s most capable security forces and have played a leading role in counterterrorism operations against Al-Shabaab across the country. Their deployment in Abdiaziz district reflects ongoing efforts by the federal government to maintain stability and deter security threats in Mogadishu.

No clashes, arrests, or security incidents were reported in the district at the time of publication.
