Analyst Questions Visa Issue After Somali Refree Barred from Travel

NAIROBI – Horn of Africa analyst Prof. Abdiwahab Sheikh Abdisamad has raised concern over a visa-related incident involving Somali international referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, saying it highlights wider questions about whether nationality should limit access to global sporting opportunities.

Prof. Abdisamad said the case has triggered debate in sporting and diplomatic circles over fairness and equality in international mobility for professionals from countries affected by travel restrictions.

He noted that Artan, who has officiated in major international competitions, has received broad support from football fans worldwide following the reported travel denial.

The analyst said the situation reflects a broader challenge facing professionals from parts of the Global South, where visa constraints can hinder participation in global events despite strong professional credentials and achievements.

Supporters have taken to social media to express solidarity, arguing that refereeing and sporting talent should not be affected by political or administrative barriers.

Authorities and relevant sporting bodies have not yet issued detailed public comments on the specific visa decision.
