DAKAR — Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has issued a message of encouragement to the national football team, the Teranga Lions, following their 3-1 defeat to reigning champions France in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup.

In a statement released on Wednesday, President Faye praised the team’s effort and urged players and supporters to remain united and focused despite the setback in their Group stage opener.
“You fought with courage and dignity against one of the strongest teams in the world,” the president said, according to the statement shared on official channels. “This defeat is not the end of our journey. The nation stands behind you.”
Senegal, African champions and one of the continent’s strongest hopes in the tournament, struggled to contain a clinical French side that capitalised on defensive errors and controlled possession for long periods.
Despite the loss, Senegal showed flashes of resilience, with their goal offering brief hope before France reasserted control in the second half.
President Faye’s message comes amid high expectations at home, where football remains a powerful symbol of national pride and unity. He called on the players to “learn from the experience and come back stronger” in their remaining group matches.
The Teranga Lions now face a crucial path forward in the group stage as they seek to revive their qualification hopes and advance to the knockout rounds.
Sports analysts in Dakar said the defeat was disappointing but not unexpected, given France’s depth and experience, and stressed that Senegal still has the quality to recover.
The team’s next fixture will be decisive in determining their chances of progressing in the tournament.
