Mogadishu — The Gedo region has recently been grappling with a tense political situation, as the Jubaland administration and the Federal Government of Somalia find themselves at odds. The Federal Government is planning to hold an election in the region aimed at selecting a new president for Jubaland.

Some traditional leaders from Gedo who spoke about the election plan said they welcome the government’s move. However, they emphasized the need to safeguard the region from any disruptions that could undermine peace and stability in the area.

The Federal Government has previously stated that it recognizes the leadership of the Jubaland administration and that it intends to conduct elections in accordance with the law, including the selection of a Jubaland president.

Meanwhile, Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Madobe) has openly opposed the Federal Government’s decision, accusing it of pursuing a plan that would dismantle the Jubaland administration—further escalating the political tension in the region.

The situation remains volatile, with both sides calling for dialogue and an agreement to ensure a peaceful election takes place in Gedo.
