Group D — Turkey have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 1-0 defeat to 10-man Paraguay in a dramatic group-stage clash.

Paraguay took the lead after just 64 seconds when Matías Galarza struck from long range, scoring what is currently the fastest goal of the tournament. The early strike ultimately proved decisive as Paraguay held on for victory despite being reduced to 10 men before halftime.

Miguel Almirón was sent off in first-half stoppage time following a VAR review for an incident involving Turkish defender Mert Müldür. The dismissal forced Paraguay to defend their narrow lead throughout the second half.
Turkey dominated possession and created multiple scoring opportunities but failed to convert, registering 32 shots without finding the net. Juventus forward Kenan Yıldız and Real Madrid midfielder Arda Güler were among those unable to break through the Paraguayan defense.
The defeat confirmed Turkey’s elimination from the tournament, ending their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
Paraguay’s win lifted them in the group standings and ensured they remain in contention for qualification, while also strengthening the position of the United States at the top of Group D following their earlier victory over Australia.
For Paraguay, the result marked a strong response after an opening defeat and kept their campaign alive as they target a return to the knockout rounds for the first time since 2010.
