MOGADISHU — Somalia’s opposition technical committee has presented a unified electoral proposal during talks with international partners, in an effort to break a long-running deadlock over the country’s electoral framework, sources said Saturday.
The delegation included senior opposition and federal member state representatives, among them Abdirahman Abdishakur, Abdi Aynte, Abdirashid Jire, Mohamed Abdirahman Dhabancad, Ahmed Abdi Kooshin, and Abdullahi Mohamed Ali Sanbaloolshe.
Sources said the group submitted a consolidated framework intended to narrow divisions among Somali political actors over the electoral model. The contents of the proposal were not immediately made public.
Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo was not represented at the meeting after his designated delegate, Balal Mahamud Osman, did not attend, according to people familiar with the talks.
International partners reportedly welcomed the initiative and urged continued dialogue among Somali stakeholders.
The discussions come amid persistent disagreements between the federal government, opposition figures and federal member states over voting systems, regional participation and election timelines.
