Israeli Media Raise Concerns Over Egypt’s Military Buildup

TEL AVIV — Israeli media have expressed concern over Egypt’s growing military capabilities, particularly its ongoing modernization efforts and activity in the Sinai Peninsula.

Reports in Israeli newspapers and commentary by security analysts said Israeli defence officials are closely monitoring Egypt’s military acquisitions, infrastructure upgrades and broader force development programmes.

According to the reports, parts of Egypt’s military expansion are being assessed in Israel as potentially exceeding the requirements of conventional border security, although no official Israeli government statement was immediately cited.

Analysts quoted in Israeli media questioned the scale and trajectory of the build-up, pointing in particular to increased military activity and enhanced deployment capacity in Sinai, a strategically sensitive area bordering Israel and the Gaza Strip.

The Sinai Peninsula has long been subject to security arrangements between the two countries under the 1979 peace treaty, which limits military deployments in certain zones while allowing exceptions for counterterrorism operations with mutual understanding.

While the reports highlighted heightened scrutiny, they also noted that Egypt’s military modernization forms part of a broader regional trend of defence expansion amid ongoing security challenges across the Middle East and North Africa.

There was no immediate public response from Egyptian authorities to the concerns raised in Israeli media.

Egypt and Israel maintain formal peace relations under the Camp David Accords, although security coordination in Sinai has at times been affected by regional instability and militant activity.
