ADDIS ABABA — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has inaugurated the Entoto–Kebena River and Riverside Development Project in Addis Ababa, a flagship urban renewal initiative aimed at improving infrastructure, environmental sustainability and public spaces in the capital.

The project covers approximately 87.6 hectares along a 10.5-kilometer stretch of river corridor and forms part of the government’s broader efforts to modernize Addis Ababa and address long-standing urban development challenges.

Officials said the development includes flood-control measures, upgraded drainage systems, pedestrian walkways, recreational facilities and expanded green areas designed to improve environmental resilience while enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Abiy described the project as an important milestone in the transformation of Addis Ababa, emphasizing the government’s commitment to creating cleaner, safer and more livable urban environments.

The initiative is expected to help reduce flood risks in vulnerable areas, restore sections of the river ecosystem and create new public spaces for recreation, tourism and community activities.

The Entoto–Kebena project follows other large-scale beautification and infrastructure programmes launched under Abiy’s administration, including river rehabilitation efforts, public parks and urban redevelopment schemes intended to reshape the appearance and functionality of the Ethiopian capital.

Supporters say the projects have improved public amenities and boosted investment, while critics have raised concerns about costs, displacement and broader economic priorities amid ongoing national challenges.

Government officials maintain that urban renewal remains a key component of Ethiopia’s long-term development strategy, aimed at supporting economic growth, environmental protection and sustainable city planning.

The inauguration marks another significant step in Addis Ababa’s evolving urban landscape as authorities seek to position the city as a modern regional hub in the Horn of Africa.
