BUJUMBURA — Burundi has marked its Independence Day with official ceremonies, military displays, and cultural events across the country, as leaders called for unity and continued efforts toward stability and development.

Main celebrations took place in the capital Bujumbura, where President Évariste Ndayishimiye presided over a ceremony attended by senior government officials, military commanders, and thousands of citizens.

The event featured a military parade by the Burundian National Defense Force, alongside cultural performances and a guard of honour, reflecting what authorities described as national pride and progress in state-building.

Celebrations were also held at Intwari Stadium, where large crowds gathered to watch performances and commemorations marking the country’s 64th independence anniversary.

Burundi gained independence from Belgium on 1 July 1962 after decades of colonial rule. This year’s commemorations came as the government continues to emphasize reconciliation, security consolidation, and economic recovery.

Officials used the occasion to highlight ongoing development projects and urged citizens to protect peace and contribute to national cohesion, while reaffirming Burundi’s commitment to regional cooperation within the Great Lakes region.

Security forces were deployed across key areas during the celebrations, which were largely peaceful, according to local reports.
