Ethiopian AUSSOM Forces Say They Are on High Alert for Operations Against Al-Shabaab

MOGADISHU — Ethiopian troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) have reportedly stepped up their military readiness, saying they are prepared to participate in operations against Al-Shabaab.

The Ethiopian forces said they remain on a high state of preparedness as Somali and international forces continue efforts to weaken Al-Shabaab’s operational capabilities and prevent the group from expanding its influence in areas where security forces are conducting counterterrorism operations.

The reported readiness comes as Somalia continues to assume greater responsibility for national security, with the Somali National Army gradually taking over bases and security positions previously held by foreign forces.

Ethiopian troops have played a significant role in Somalia’s security operations for years, particularly in regions bordering Ethiopia and in areas of central and southern Somalia where Al-Shabaab has maintained an operational presence.

The forces’ latest statement signals continued military cooperation between Somalia and Ethiopia despite ongoing changes in the international security mission and the gradual transition toward Somali-led security operations.

Security officials have repeatedly emphasized the importance of coordination between Somali forces and AUSSOM contingents in preventing Al-Shabaab from exploiting security gaps during the transition.

The Somali government has been working to strengthen the capacity of its armed forces, while AUSSOM troops continue to provide support, including security operations, training and assistance to Somali authorities.

The latest developments come amid continued security concerns in parts of Somalia, where Al-Shabaab remains capable of carrying out attacks against military positions, government facilities and civilian targets.

Further details are expected regarding the scope, location and timing of any planned operations.
