NAIROBI — Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Aden Duale, on Saturday led a high-profile reception in Nairobi for Somali international referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, celebrating his historic achievement as the first Somali official selected for a FIFA World Cup tournament.

The event, held at BBS Mall in Eastleigh, brought together members of the Somali diaspora, Kenyan political leaders, and football officials in a show of regional solidarity and support for sporting talent in East Africa.

Artan was named among an elite group of 52 match officials selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a breakthrough moment for Somali representation in global football officiating. Although his tournament participation was later disrupted, his selection was widely hailed as a historic milestone for both Somalia and African refereeing.

Speaking at the reception, Duale praised Artan’s resilience and determination, saying setbacks should not overshadow achievement.

“Success is not only about reaching the final destination, but about the courage to break barriers,” he said, urging young people across the region to remain focused despite challenges.

The ceremony also highlighted Kenya’s ongoing sports infrastructure drive under President William Ruto, including a multi-billion-shilling programme to complete dozens of stadiums nationwide. Officials said flagship projects such as the 60,000-seat Talanta Stadium are expected to boost Kenya’s bid to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

The gathering was attended by senior officials including Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, Somalia’s ambassador to Kenya Jabril Abdulle, and Football Kenya Federation President Football Kenya Federation Hussein Mohammed, among others.

Organisers said the event was intended not only to honour Artan’s achievement but also to inspire young athletes across East Africa, reinforcing the message that historic breakthroughs can pave the way for future generations despite setbacks along the journey.
