CAIRO — Egypt has reaffirmed its support for Eritrea’s sovereignty and pledged to deepen economic and security cooperation with Asmara, highlighting a growing partnership that comes amid mounting geopolitical competition in the Horn of Africa and the strategically vital Red Sea region.

In a statement issued after high-level diplomatic consultations, Cairo said relations with Eritrea continue to advance through regular exchanges between senior officials and growing coordination on regional issues. Egypt described Eritrea as an important partner in efforts to promote stability and security across the Horn of Africa.

“Egypt remains committed to supporting Eritrea’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity,” the statement said, while emphasizing the importance of respecting the sovereignty of all states in the region.

The Egyptian government said it intends to expand bilateral trade, encourage joint investment projects and increase private-sector engagement in Eritrea as part of broader efforts to strengthen economic ties between the two countries.

Cairo also reiterated its position on Red Sea security, stressing that responsibility for safeguarding the strategic waterway should remain with the countries bordering it. The statement said cooperation among Red Sea littoral states is essential to ensuring maritime security, protecting international shipping lanes and preserving regional stability.

The remarks come at a time of heightened diplomatic activity in the Horn of Africa, where regional powers have sought to strengthen alliances and secure strategic interests amid shifting political and security dynamics.

Egypt has increasingly focused on strengthening partnerships with countries along the Red Sea corridor, which serves as one of the world’s most important maritime routes for global trade and energy supplies. Analysts view Cairo’s growing engagement with Eritrea as part of a broader effort to enhance regional influence and coordinate responses to emerging security challenges.

The statement also underscored Egypt’s support for peace and stability throughout the Horn of Africa, warning against actions that could undermine state sovereignty or threaten regional security. Cairo called for greater cooperation among regional governments to address common challenges, including terrorism, instability and economic development.

Relations between Egypt and Eritrea have expanded in recent years through a series of high-level visits and diplomatic consultations. The two countries have frequently coordinated positions on regional issues, including Red Sea security, political developments in the Horn of Africa and efforts to promote stability across the region.

The latest statement signals continued convergence between Cairo and Asmara on key strategic issues as governments across the Horn of Africa seek to navigate an increasingly complex regional landscape marked by security concerns, economic competition and growing international interest in the Red Sea.
