WARGAADHI — Somalia’s Minister of Defense, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, accompanied by the Commander of the Somali National Army (SNA), Major General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud, visited frontline military units and local community defense forces stationed in Wargaadhi, a strategic area in the Middle Shabelle region, officials said.
The visit comes as the Somali government continues to intensify military operations against the militant group Al-Shabaab, which the government refers to as the Khawaarij. The delegation met with troops deployed in the area and assessed ongoing security operations aimed at dismantling militant strongholds.
Addressing the soldiers, Minister Fiqi praised their sacrifice, courage, and commitment in the fight against insurgent groups. He commended the forces for recent battlefield achievements and urged them to maintain pressure on militants operating in central and southern Somalia.
“The Somali government remains fully committed to supporting our armed forces and accelerating operations aimed at restoring security and stability across the country,” Fiqi told troops during the visit. He emphasized that defeating terrorism remains a national priority and called on security forces to redouble their efforts to eliminate extremist threats.
Major General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud also lauded the troops for their readiness and professionalism, describing their role as critical to Somalia’s ongoing security gains. He encouraged greater coordination and unity among military units and local defense forces engaged in frontline operations.
“The operations are being conducted according to a clear strategy and will continue until all areas where the militants remain active are liberated,” the army commander said.
The visit formed part of a broader overland tour undertaken by the defense minister and the army chief in recent days across Galgaduud and Middle Shabelle regions. The tour is intended to boost troop morale, strengthen operational coordination, and accelerate the ongoing campaign against Al-Shabaab.
Somalia has stepped up military offensives in recent years with the support of local community forces, regional partners, and international allies. Government officials say sustained operations have resulted in the recapture of several towns and villages previously controlled by the militants, although Al-Shabaab continues to launch attacks in parts of the country.
Wargaadhi is among several key locations where Somali security forces are maintaining pressure on militant networks as part of a wider effort to restore state authority and improve security in central Somalia.
